Brains in Berlin proudly present

Last night's tech check went reasonably well, minor hick-ups still with the beamer/picture, the gremlins want to play their part. Hopefully all fixed by the time 10 August rolls around. Preliminary plans include cover versions in the music round (I have found TONS!!!) or TV themes (I have even more TONS!!) - nice sound in the whole pub, even mystery sound round is possible. One of the question rounds is gonna be themed, I will prepare 5 topics and you can vote. Or I pick one blind.
Picture round depends on big screen availabilty, if not we'll have nice A3-sized colour handouts. Unless you prefer dodgy, blurry, unrecognizable black & white copies.
The number of questions per round will drop to 9. Not that it really saves us much time but I like 9. Nice number. Connect 9 stays Connect 9. Connection is 10 :)
More details if and when I have them.

Update: Oh do I ever have music for you!!! One of them days we will have a 6 round music quiz. And if you want to practise or guess what my songs might be - kuckst du hier, eh!

ABBA doch nicht so

The things I do and listen to. For research purposes. How many of you knew that ABBA tried to sing in German (emphasis on try). I just happened upon of of the most entertaining and edumacating music blogs in a long time. Spent way too much time there and will get back as soon as I can spare a minute. Follow the link and get lost in the treasure trove of terrific tunes. But whatever you do, DON'T listen to this one here...

It's actually so bad, it could - along with Celine Dion's "My heart will go on" - replace yellow & red cards. You don't behave, you listen to this all night :) :)

Ciggie Break Rounds - Raucherpausenrunden

Here's more ideas for rules & rounds.

Ciggie break rounds (time: CL=cigarette length, i.e. time it takes an average smoker to finish an average cigarette - I do remember :)
Scrabble. Lucky dip. Each team gets to pick 10 "tiles" from a bag, and has 1 CL to come up with a "proper" word using as many letters as possible, 1 point per letter used. Dictonary & InQuizitor rule.
Anagrams. Either use above-mentioned "tiles" or hand-out sheet. Can be themed or Connect 5-9, or Oddd1Out.
Round o'Drinks. Barkeep prepares shots with 5 ingredients. Each team gets a shot glass and has to guess what's in it. Obviously alcoholic :)
Spice World. We had that before. Each team gets 5 "mystery" spices and has to name them. Snort, smell, smoke, chew...
Word Search. Teams get a sheet with a number of words hidden, find as many as possible in 1 CL.
Spot the Diff. See above, only 2 pictures with a number of differences to spot.
Funny Caption. As previously used in the Quiky, a more or less funny picture is shown on the big screen between rounds, each team has to hand in an even funnier caption before the last round. As usual, InQuizitor is judge & jury :)

Raucherpausen-Runden (Spielzeit: ZL=Zigarettenlänge. Zeit die ein durchschnittlicher Raucher für eine durchschnittliche Zigarette benötigt .. ich kann mich dunkel erinnern :)
Scrabble. Blinde Kuh. Jedes Team zieht 10 Scrabble-Spielsteine (o.ä.) aus einem Sack und hat 5-10 Minuten (durchschnittliche Raucherpausenlänge), um ein Wort zu bilden. So lang wie möglich und real existierend. Für jeden verwendeten Buchstaben gibt's einen Punkt. Wörterbuch & InQuizitor haben das letzte Wort :)
Anagrams. Entweder mit og. Spielsteinen oder auf vorbereiteten Zetteln sind Anagramme zu enträtseln. Kann thematisch sein oder Roter Faden oder Fünftes Rad .
Getränkerunde. Teams kriegen Shotgläser mit einem "Cocktail" aus 5 Zutaten, die in einer Zigarettenlänge zu erraten sind. Natürlich alkoholisch :)
Heiteres Gewürzeraten oder Spice World. Hatten wir schon mal. Jedes Team bekommt einen Umschlag/Teller usw. mit 5 Gewürzen die durch schmecken, riechen, rauchen, fühlen oder schnupfen zu erraten sind.
Wortsuche. Teams bekommen eine Zettel mit einem Wortsucherätsel, thematisch, und müssen in einer ZL so viele wie möglich finden.
Der kleine Unterschied. Auf zwei Bildern sind eine bestimmte Anzahl von Unterschieden zu finden.
Lustige Bildunterschrift. Alte Quiky-Hasen erinnern sich. Zwischen den Runden erscheint auf der Leinwand ein mehr oder weniger lustiges Bild. Jedes Team hat bis zur letzten Runde Zeit eine noch lustigere Bildunterschrift einzureichen. Wie immer ist der InQuiztor Richter & Geschworene.

The more things change

OK, here are your suggestions (from the few that bothered sending some in)

1. Each round gets the same number of points (more or less). That means fewer pictures/points in the picture round, more points in “regular” rounds. I had been thinking about it myself, I would like to go back to the “bonus round” – those of you who went to the quiz in Zosch will remember. If the points are equally distributed you can name one round as your “joker” round and double your points in that round.
2. Have a themed question round, pick two specific themes (horror films, US presidents etc.) and set five questions on each. Easy enough to do, will consider it.
3. For a number questions have 1 point for being in the plus/minus range and a bonus point for being spot on. Or get the point only for correct answers. I want to bin half points anyway.
4. Connect 9 more often. Or maybe two Connect 5 in a round if simpler.
5. Fewer multiple choice and True or False questions! Actually, some people last season asked for more multiple choice. As for True or False – I have a few good ones I’m definitely gonna use:)
6. Have a ciggie break bonus question along the lines of "How far is it from Berlin to Paris?" Closest answer gets a bonus point or two. Which might lead to cheating when I can’t see you. And I would hate to confiscate mobiles. I have however other plans for the ciggie break(s), you won't be bored.
7. Have a rollover Jackpot question each week. Will consider it for the future.
8. Fewer genetic experiments. And I thought they were fun.
9. More tricky questions on current affairs, e.g politics, economy, sports. Fewer questions about actors & celebrities. We can go back to having a current affairs round... now and again.
   
10. “Themed” picture rounds, e.g. 8 or 10 pictures of cities or people or thingies.. and the question is “who or what ist that” or “can you name the city?”. Better on paper. And you lose all your points if you get one or more answers wrong. Hm. I might – where necessary – throw in a picture round with printouts but in general I will continue to use the big screen. As for themed rounds – seems a bit less interesting to me but if you want them... Same goes for the gamble thing.
11. One thing I want to reintroduce – the Yogi Round. Again, oldtimers will remember. The losing team – should they play the following week – can choose a topic at which they think they’re really good. I will pick 5 questions. Could be a “ciggie break round”. That means we’ll reintroduce the Yogi Price too - little consolation price for the last team.
12. Depending on the attendance I’m considering a “Champions League”. Points can be collected over a certain period of time and the overall winner gets an extra price.

So - these are the suggestions for changes. For better or worse - up to you. Let me know your thoughts on the above ideas and I will carefully sonsider each idea before I start writing the first quiz. As usual, if you don't comment you have to live with the consequences :)

Hier sind die bisher von euch eingegangenen Vorschläge & Änderungswünsche bzw. meine Ideen.

1. Jede Runde ergibt die (ungefähr) gleich Punktanzahl. Das bedeutet weniger Bilder/Punkte in der Bilderrunde, mehr Punkte in den "Wissensrunden". Hab ich schon selbst drüber nachgedacht, weil ich gerne die "Bonusrunde" wieder einführen würde. Alte "Zosch-Hasen" werden sich erinnern. Wenn die Punkte in jeder Runde ungefähr die gleichen sind kann jedes Team vor Beginn eine Runde als Joker wählen und die Punkte verdoppeln.
2. Thematische Fragerunden. Zwei spezifische Themen (z.B. Horrorfilme, US-Präsidenten usw) mit jeweils 5 Fragen. Läßt sich einrichten. Auch mit 10-Fragen-Runden.
   
3. Für einige Fragen 1 Punkte für Antworten die in der plus/minus-Spanne liegen und ein Bonuspunkte für absolut korrekte Antworten. Oder Punkte nur für korrekte Antworten. Hab daran gedacht halbe Punkte abzuschaffen.
   
4. Mehr "Connect 9". Oder zwei "Connect 5" Runden falls einfacher. 9 machen mehr Spaß :)
   
5. Weniger multiple choice und Richtig oder Falsch-Fragen. Hm.. einige hatten in der letzten Spielzeit nach mehr multiple choice gefragt.. Und Richtig oder Falsch bleibt weiterhin Bestandteil, wenn vielleicht auch nicht als ganze Runde. Hab da schon ein paar schöne Fragen :)
6. Raucherpausenfrage, z.B. "Wie weit ist es von Berlin nach Paris?" Genaueste Antwort gibt ein oder zwei Bonuspunkte. Könnte zu mogeln führen wenn ich während der Pause nicht alle im Blick hab. Und ich würde ungern Handys verbannen. Ich hab schon schöne Spiel & Runden für die Raucherpause(n), euch wird schon nicht langweilig.
   
7. Jackpot-Frage jede Woche. Wird in Betracht gezogen für die (nicht ganz unmittelbare) Zukunft
   
8. Weniger genetische Experimente. Und ich dachte die machen Spaß...
9. Mehr knifflige Fragen zu aktuellen Themen wie Politik, Wirtschaft & Sport. Weniger Schauspielerthemen. Wir hatten früher eine "Aktuelles"-Runde, können wir wieder einführen.. ab und zu.
   
10. “Thematische" Bilderrunden, z.B. 8 oder 10 Bilder von Städten oder Leuten oder Dingen und fragen "wer / was ist das" oder "wie heißt die Stadt?" Geht eher besser auf Papier. Und wer ein Bild falsch rät verliert alle Punkte in der Runde. Hm. Ich hab vor - wenn notwendig – ab und zu Bilder auf Zetteln auszuteilen (Raucherpausenrunde?). Im Allgemeinen wird die Bilderrunde aber weiterhin auf der Leinwand (bzw. ggf. den Fernsehschirmen) erscheinen. Thematische Runden lassen sich einrichten, halte ich persönlich zwar für nicht so abwechslungsreich und interessant aber wenn's gewünscht wird.. Gleiches gilt für die "Zocker"Idee.
    
11. Ein "feature" das ich wieder einführen will ist die Jogi-Runde. Alte Hasen erinnern sich. Die Verlierer - sollten sie in der folgenden Woche an den Start gehen - können ein Thema wählen in dem sie meinen mehr als die anderen zu wissen. Ich suche dann dazu 5 Fragen aus. Könnte eine Raucherpausen- oder 2x5 Themenrunde sein. Das bedeutet natürlich auch daß wir den Jogi-Preis, einen Trostpreis für die Letzten, wieder einführen :)
    
12. Abhängig von der Anwesenheit könnten wir auch die “Champions League” wieder einführen. Punkte können über einen bestimmten Zeitraum gesammelt werden und der Führende in der Gesamtwertung erhält einen Extra-Preis.

So - das sind die Vorschläge für Veränderungen. Ob zum Besseren oder Schlechteren hängt von euch ab. Teilt mir eure Gedanken zu den obigen Ideen mit und ich werde jeden Vorschlag gründlich überdenken bevor ich anfange das erste Quiz zusammenzustellen. Wie üblich - wer sich nicht äußert muß mit den Konsequenzen leben :)

Anyroad, it's official now. The new quiz starts on Monday 10 August, at 8pm (and not quarter or half past :)
Name's InQuizition, Irish Harp InQuizition. Venue - yep, you guessed it right. Irish Harp Pub in Charlottenburg. Easy enough to get there, by then the general public transportation chaos should be resolved. The basic quiz rules remain the same, multi media, German & English, big screen pix, 5 rounds(ish), nuts & shots, teams of six max. ...
Changes: NO entry fee, 1st prize is a bottle of alcohol (if you don't like vodka you can pick something else), the place has air condition!!! and a lovely smokers "lounge" with chairs and tables.
While it's probably not necessary to reserve a table during the holiday season, you can do so by just phoning them at (030) 22 32 87 35 or mail through the contact for on the website.
All submitted ideas & wishes for new features or changes will be up here over the weekend, more in the next post. In the meantime - goeth forth and practiseth, it might be different from the old quiz but certainly not much easier (unless you wish so).

Yippeeh, es ist offiziell. Das neue Quiz startet am Montag den 10. August um 20.00 Uhr (und nicht viertel nach oder halb :)
Der Name - InQuizition, Irish Harp InQuizition. Der Ort - yep, richtig vermutet - Irish Harp Pub in Charlottenburg. Leicht zu finden und einfach zu erreichen, und bis zum 10.8. sollte sich auch das derzeitige BVG-Chaos wieder entspannt haben.
Die grundlegenden Spielregeln und Formate bleiben die selben, multi-media, Deutsch & English, große Leinwand, (ca.) 5 Runden, Nüsse & Shots,6 Spieler max. pro Team...
Neuerungen: KEIN Spielgeld mehr, Siergerpreis eine Flasche Alk (wer keinen Wodka will kann sich was anderes wünschen), der Laden hat Aircondition und - für die Bedürftigen, zu denen ich nicht mehr zähle :) - ein nettes Raucherzimmer, mit Tischen & Stühlen.
Und obwohl es wahrscheinlich während der Ferien nicht notwendig sein wird Tische zu reservieren könnt ihr das wenn ihr wollt trotzdem tun, per Telefon unter (030) 22 32 87 35 oder mail über das Kontaktformular auf der Website.
Alle bisher eingesandten Vorschläge & Wünsche zu Änderungen oder neuen Runden werden hier über's Wochenende erscheinen, damit ihr euch dazu äußern könnt. Almost forgot, I promised to put up a 5-in-1 genetic experiment made by Jon for Feid Club's home quiz.
I have looked at it long and hard and can only guess at 1 and a half "celebrities". Oh, and they're all sports-related. Go and give it a good guess, I'll try and get the answers from the artist.

Das obige Puzzle ist ein genetisches Experiment von Jon, das sich aus 5 (mehr oder weniger) berühmten SportlerInnen zusammensetzt. Ich hab' nicht die leiseste, ihr könnt euch gerne dran versuchen während ich los gehe um die Anworten in Erfahrung zu bringen.

Cryptic canvas

Not much time this week for challenges and conundrums, at least not for home-made ones. Well, I do have quite a nice collection already, both picture and other puzzles BUT I will save them for the proper occasion. All you need to know for now is that I've been grinning wickedly for a few days now. Expect evil things :)
In the meantime, my usual thorough research has led me to a great movie quiz which you could try. You'll find it here. Unfortunately, you'd have to know the English film titles as most clues only work in English. Good thing is, you can save your score and come back later, after a bit of choogling (which is a cheat-google hybrid :)

(I got 30 so far, but obsession and pride dictate that I return and finish the task.)

Update: 46/50... the last 4 probably never made my list of must-see movies.

Last order please

Suggestions for rounds are slowly coming in (and are being considered). Since we have a deadline and much of my preparation depends on what the format is going to look like, I need all other ideas this week. A list (in English & German) is going to be up here this weekend, as some sort of "poll". You can have your say on what you'd like to see and what not.
Two things up front, I'd still pretty much like to run my own quiz, it didn't seem to be all that bad. If you want to send me ideas you've seen at other quizzes (especially in Berlin), by all means do so. I'm not going to copy other quizmasters tho, if you prefer things their way, you know where to find them. And the ultimate say in what goes and what doesn't .. see rule no. 1 :)

Für alle die ab August wieder dabei sein wollen und noch Vorschläge oder Wünsche zu Änderungen oder Verbesserungen haben (und diese bisher für sich behalten haben) - hier ist die letzte Gelegenheit sich einzubringen.
Bisher sind einige Ideen eingegangen die im neuen Quiz auftauchen werden und einige die ich persönlich nicht allzu toll finde. Um herauszufinden ob ich in der Minderheit bin und mich dem Wunsch des Volkes beugen sollte werden alle bis dahin eingesandten Vorschläge zur "Abstimmung" Ende der Woche im Blog veröffentlicht (in Deutsch und Englisch :). Ihr könnt euren Senf dazu geben und die Mehrheitsentscheidungen werden dann zu neuen Runden.
Zwei Dinge vorab. Wer bei anderen Pub Quizzes (besonders in Berlin) Ideen sammelt kann die natürlich einsenden, allerdings habe ich nicht die Absicht, andere Quizmaster zu kopieren, sondern will weiterhin meinem eigenen Stil folgen. Und bezüglich der allerletzten Entscheidung was geht und was nicht - siehe Spielregel Nr. 1.
So - wer also noch was beizutragen wünscht, Einsendeschluß ist Freitag nacht. Wie üblich per mail, Kommentar hier, oder facebook group "Brains in Berlin".

New beginnings, new ideas

All good things come to those who wait. Or so they say. After repeated moaning I've finally got some suggestions for changes/improvements for the Irish Harp InQUIZition. Thank you Jon. Since not everyone is a facebook addict, I'll re-post them here. You can comment on them, make your own suggestions, or live with what life brings come August.

• make sure the points in each round are roughly balanced at around 20 pts. So a few less points in the picture round, more 2pt bullshit/general knowledge questions
• have a themed question round, pick two specific themes (horror films, US presidents whatever) and set five questions on each
• for number questions have 1 pt for being in the plus/minus range and a bonus point for being spot on
• Connect 9 is a fun round and I'd like to see it more often, but I guess it can be tough to prepare, maybe you could have two connect fives in a round. Is that simpler?
• *less* multiple choice and true/false questions!
• keep the music round as it is

As for the anticipation.. the plans for the Irish Harp InQUIZition are taking shape. It looks as if we could start as early as Monday 3 August. Details on rounds, rules & stuff are still a tad hazy. Since no one has taken the offered chance to contribute ideas you will have to live with what I come up with. Don't go complaining. And since it'll be a lot of work to get everything ready for the grand openening I won't have much time to put up puzzles for exercise's and entertainment's sake. You will have to run your own home quizzes, or practise somewhere else in the next 3 weeks.

Cottage Quiz

So we did it and went there. And did it. Well, I lasted exactly one round then I was slightly bored and decided to spend the rest of the night elsewhere. Not saying it's all that bad (the quiz, that is) but I had expected more after the hype.
No competition for the new and revamped one come August :)

Show must go on

While I haven't even ticked off half the items on my I-want-to-do list, and I'm actually enjoying that little bit of extra spare time, I have given in to the nagging of certain people and started thinking about Quiky - the Trek continues.
And before y'all start shouting with glee and getting abbysitters for Thursdays, the emphasis was on "thinking about". The way things stand we're at least another 3-4 weeks from the first round (thought we'd wait until LN is en vacances :)
The venue and day are most likely going to change. Irish Harp and Mondays seems to be the combination at the moment. Place meets all the technical requirements so that we'd have the same multi media fun as before. Same goes for prizes for winners (& losers). We might even stick with the old name "Irish Harp inQUIZition".
First though I have to rewrite rules, rethink the format, do a thourough tech-check, and hash out details with the manager.
In the meantime, I'd appreciate your ideas, suggestions, and wishes for the new season. I heard a last time round, during ciggie breaks. More "think" time after the round, shorter or fewer rounds, more multiple choice questions, more science, bigger answer sheets or fewer points per question, etc.
Let me know what you think we should change or keep to make it better than it ever was. As usual you can mail your ideas, leave comments here for all to see and debate, or leave a message on FB (use the Quiky Group wall, that way we can all see & comment).

Und der guten Ordnung halber die deutsche Fassung:
Da seit geraumer Zeit einige Leutchen mit den Füßen trappeln und fragen wann's denn endlich weitergeht, hab ich begonnen mir Gedanken über die neue Quiz-Spielzeit zu machen. Mit Betonung auf "begonnen Gedanken zu machen". Zumindest in den nächsten 3-4 Wochen müssen von Quiz-Entzug geplagte Ratefreunde weiterhin fremd gehen oder sich ihre wöchentlichen Rätsel hier holen.
Nach aktuellem Stand der Dinge werden sich aller Wahrscheinlichkeit auch Ort & Wochentag ändern. Momentan sieht's eher nach Montag im Irish Harp (Charlottenburg) aus. die technischen Voraussetzungen sind die selben, die Preise für Gewinner & Verlierer auch, und der alte Name "Irish Harp inQUIZition" könnte wieder ausgekramt werden.
Vor Saisonstart muß ich allerdings noch das Format überdenken, Regeln umschreiben, Technikprobe machen und mit dem Manager Details aushandeln.
In der Zwischenzeit hätte ich gerne eure Ideen, Vorschläge und Wünsche zur neuen Spielzeit. Einige von euch hatten während der Raucherpausen oder nach dem Quiky schon Anregungen geäußert, wie z.B. mehr Bedenkzeit nach den Runden, mehr multiple choice-Fragen, mehr Wissenschaft, kürzere oder weniger Runden, größere Antwortzettel oder weniger Punkte pro Frage, usw. Laßt mich wissen was wir ändern oder beibehalten sollten, damit das neue Quiz noch besser wird. Wie immer könnt ihr eure Vorschläge per mail schicken, oder hier zur öffentlichen Debatte als Kommentar einreichen oder im Facebook als Kommentar/Message hinterlassen (am besten in der Quiky-Gruppe, dann haben wir alle was davon).
Und wenn die Zeit trotz aller Pläne und Veränderungen noch reicht findet ihr hier weiterhin Bilderrätsel (ich werd lauter neue machen müssen für den Fall daß einige ein gutes Gedächtnis haben :)
