Bitter sweet

After tonight's chocolate & gummi bear round - look what Ferrero-related news I found when checking my yahoo account. (I actually just clicked on it because I misread the headline as 'Chocolate Tycoon Dies In Bikini Accident'... that's what happens when you don't drink alcohol...

Oh, and so much for Ferrero & 'Kinder':
Kinder Surprise originated in 1972 in Italy as Kinder Sorpresa. The German word "Kinder" in the name came about because in 1967, Ferrero's German subsidiary introduced 'Kinder Chocolate' ("Kinderschokolade") to the German market, and in 1968 that product was introduced to Ferrero's native Italy, establishing the "Kinder" brand there, prior to the introduction of the Kinder Sorpresa chocolate eggs. Kinder Surprise eggs were introduced to the German market in 1974, and for many years this was the largest market for the product....

;)

Points of tonight's Eggstravaganza up here tomorrow or Wednesday when I fell less queasy.

And if we find one more team - by Thursday - we will have a quiz next Monday. So far in the book

Jenni & The Belles (34)
Bratpfanne (33)
Mütze (31) (oder wolltet ihr wirklich Tisch 30 haben?)
The Simpsons (51)

April hat - her damit ;)

Mystery solved

Those of you who remember the mystery object we had in #24 (?) and did not believe me when I said it was a bean slicer - I promised you proof.

Up close and personal.. wäre auch mal 'n Macro-Foto wert :D

The naked truth

That was the funnest (I know that's not a proper word :) and funniest (yes, there is a difference :) quiz night I had since.... the Mata Hari one. It might have had something to do with the relatively high percentage of T&A on display (and definitely with the 3 pints of Guinness - you evil people made me go back on my promise. Thanx :). And of course it had to do with the quality and sense of humour of the multi-cultural and multi-lingual teams :)
Anyroad, before I cover nude leftovers, here are the points.

Mummy Kazoo, if /when you read this - your boy done good!! Bit lacking in the arts department but I admit he was a tad distracted. Trying to spot the ball. As were the rest of his team.
So - to give yis all more to practise with, here's all you need to know about "what's-her-face-with-the-big-balls"...
yes, her..
Her name, in case you care, is Simona Halep. 17, Romanian. And the rest is here. Take a last long butchers because she's soon gonna be a tad flat.
And if you've just got into the ball-spotting thing, you might want to look here, or here, or here. I'm sure you can do the rest of your research on your own :) But whatever you do, do NOT look here. BTW - the full version of the "points" background - here.

Now, Inquizition # 15 next week is the last one in November as the Irish Harp is closed for a private Veranstaltung on Monday 23 (which gives me almost a whole week off. Yippeeeh!!!! Urlaub!!! :)
And since we don't have a Yogi theme I'm gonna pick one. Let's make it... The Moon. In history, science, technology, music, sports, advertising, film...
Round 1 could be Travel & Geography, Round 2 - Big Screen, Small Screen (aka Movie & TV).
Music is The Name Game. Songs with names in the title. Ya know, Mandy, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Lola, Johnny Walker, Jesse, Daniel, Jennifer, Alison, Phillipa, Sue, Deborah, Annabel, too... and Who TF is Alice??!
Keep swotting, here's an interesting and edumacating source for music trivia. More tips & links up here, demnächst. Watch this space. And have a good week.

Strike One

It was bound to happen and I can't say I was surprised. While the actual quiz was fun and the teams were very knowledgable and well-behaved, the rest of Quiky #293 was less pleasant.
Lack of preparation, drunken gate-crashers and a rather Spartan attendance made it a prime example for how I don't want to spend my Thursday nights. The next two weeks will show if this gig has a future.
Anyroads, the competition was fierce (and sometimes serious :) and in the end it was quite tight. The pretty version of the table might appear here sometime later this week, in the meantime the bullet-point version.
  1. Smashing Peaches 56
  2. Feid Club Reunited 51
  3. Pinkies & The Brain 49,5
  4. The Serious Competitors 47,5
  5. 3 Zweisteins 36,5
Next week's music might be polyphonic ringtones, haven't had that in a while. Rest up here soon, along with sample questions and more pictures. Till then, have a good one.

BTW - was Schokoladenfabriken angeht - Peaches, ihr hattet Recht, und auch nicht... nicht daß es was am Ergebnis geändert hätte :)
Oompa loompa doompety doo, I've got more perfect puzzles for you...

As for Rose McGowan's .. dubious sense of style... guckst du hier.

Points & Patrick Swayze

Ritualistically, first things first. InQuizition #13 - Punkte.

Leninskij 79
Wilmersdorfer Witwen 53
Föderation Schranke 41
Team Max 31

Brown-eyed girl

Thanks to the ever-reliable and utterly diligent Stewart, the mystery surrounding Mata Hari's eyes has been solved. Guckst du hier (in inglisch :)

So allegedly she had brown eyes as a child and later turned into a greenish-eyed ... monster?!?
Thanks again Stewart, the next puzzle is probably just around the corner.
Monday night's riddles include tunes about the Big Apple (not just in the title tho), Capital geography (capital cities around the globe, their mayors, coats of arms, nicknames, sights and history. And all that in only 9 questions).
Yogi round seems to be all up to me (unless someone else would like to throw in a suggestion). Question round #3 is brought to you by the letter B. Which means that all the answers start with the letter "B". Should make it a bit easier :)
Pictures are the usual BS.
See you Monday at 8. Till then, have a good one.

14/10/2009

Coming up roses..

First things first - Monday night's points. As so often, not too many teams but I prefer quality over quantity anyways. And it was fun. As so often.

And now to the part with the unanswered questions. I still haven't found what I was looking for, reliable information on what colour Mata Hari's eyes were. Help or clues appreciated.
Another question tho shall be answered (much to the joy of our male audience :). Someone asked (themselves?) what Rose McGowan's dress might have looked like front-side.
Here's what.

As to the question what she was thinking when she picked it/put it on - I guess you need something bold when you don't want to be outdone by Mr. Manson.

And next week we look at some eye candy for our female quizzers :)
Other features of InQuizition #11 include songs about the Big Apple, Capital punishment (i.e. geopgraphy, capital cities) and genetic experiments with couples.
Till then, send your suggestions or wishes, enjoy the last days of autumn, and have a good one.

May Day - mission accomplished

Just a quick(y) one to say thanks once more. But for the noisy gate-crashers towards the end it was another great quiz night. MAYbe not as balanced (topically) and well-prepared as I (and you) would have loved it to be but good fun nonetheless.
Points, leftovers, questions, answers, pictures & other BS (in English & Deutsch) up here when I'm back from a well-deserved, badly-needed, and much anticipated weekend...

Have a good one, stay safe, and not necessarily sober... after all, kein Alkohol ist auch keine Lösung..

Happy May Day, schönen Ersten Mai, bonne fête du Travail (strange, innit, that our French friends celebrate work...)

17/04/2009

Learning curves & leftovers

In the light of recent events, here's a new rule. After the winners have been announced and the last tune has faded away, the quiz night ends. No more requests, no more open mike nights, no more trusting people to respect property and prevalent rules.
And team 42 1/2 would like to (over)share the following information. Go to Amazon.de and look for "Sachbuch".... Go on, try it. But don't say I didn't warn you. (It only works in German, and I can't believe I spent 5 minutes finding the respective search term in English....).

The rest tomorrow, when the brain's had a few hours to recuperate and the batteries have been recharged.

Happy pigs and highly recommended books

I'ts 2am and before I can't remember later today...

It's quiz night at the Happy Pig tonight (Friday) and I'm going.. if anyone cares to join me...here's where
Just 3 minutes off Ostkreuz.. cute little pub, (comparatively) cheap beer, and you can smoke :)
Quiz starts at 9pm, it's 50 questions on a sheet, 40 minutes time. No charge (as far as I know), and a bottle of whisk(e)y as first prize... rest of the details I forgot.

Recommended reading (not for the quiz :) Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, and 1984.

That's all she wrote today, leftover links, points, questions and pictures up here over the weekend.
Have a good one, see you next week...

13/03/2009

Green, white & gold - gone

Now that was a rather good one. More alcohol in the music round than in the QuizMiz' glass, a good turnout and largely well-behaved quizzers.
And mixed "themed" rounds seem to be a good idea, regardless of colour or theme. We shall do that again. "Silver" has a nice ring to it.
Points will be up here before the much deserved, badly needed, and all too short holiday.

Best line(s) of the night - Team Chris(sy): "next time you should ask questions we can answer" and (after the first showing of the "Gone in 110 seconds") Team Thomas Müller Superstar: "what were we supposed to do?"... how about paying attention?

The rest here shortly(ish)... Good night, and good luck...

Deadly poets' society

Here are last week's poems in full. (I admit that lines 1+2, 3+4, and 5+6 rhyming would have made it easier/more fun/better poems)

(The Hamburgers)

(Massively OSSM)

There was ice on the ground, the weather was bad.
We went to a ball, like Travolta, to dance,
it was about as much fun as a disco in France.
So we went round the corner to sing Karaoke,
We started with ABBA but it’s not very folky.
Curse God for that evening, for the winner was mad.
(Gwen ha du)

In France, da singt die Gall.
ABBA, wir wissen es all’
The winner takes it all.
Bei Wind und Wetter,
ohne Disco, Ice und Travolta’s Vetter.
Wir bleiben am Ball.
(The Killers)

In France, da is stets schlechtes Wetter,

(Bonsai Brain)

Last winter in the ice of France
I was a disco god like Travolta.
I remember the fun and hot weather of Malta,
We danced to disco and sang karaokea
and although I mastered the hokey kokey,
I was never a winner at the ABBA ball dance.
(The Pogues)

Watch the jumping disco ball,
have fun, even if the weather’s bad,s
sing “Ice, Ice Baby” or something sad.
Feel like god in France
doing the Travolta dance.
As ABBA sang, the winner takes it all!!
(Völlig Verzweifelt)

Friday 13

Not good.
But that's largely due to the evil hangover after 8 sorts of alcohol last night. Against better judgement.
Apologies in advance because points, poems & preview will only appear here next week. This weekend is reserved for my beloved brummie, good music, and some much needed rest.

Have a good one, Valentine or not, see you soon.

Quiky 275 - Rankings & more

Alreet, since there's not much time before #276 I'll skip the part with the photoshopping last week's table & points and jot them down without the trimmings

Bembelboys 52
Pinky & The Brain 46,5
My Pen Doesn't Work 46
Rumpelburger 41,5
Foggies 35,5
AP Team 34,5

Funniest answers/guesses to Mystery Sounds of the Week will eventually end up here too, maybe even with sound clips.
And if I ever have enough time, the "Connect Nine" round, Clint Eastwood edition.

07/02/2009

Drinking tunes

As promised, the music next week is alcohol-related. Might be Gone in 60 (or 90) seconds tho, with alcohol labels providing the pictures :)

Not sure about the other rounds (apart from the usual mix of BS, genetix & stuff in Picture Round), if you have suggestions or favourite topics - let me know.

Anagram round didn't seem to go down too well so that's not in the plans for a while...

Mystery Sounds of the Week was a blast (at least I had a good laugh) but it only works with a limited number of teams, due to the reduced ambient noise. If we're not too many for Quiky #276 we'll have another go - this time maybe Sounds in Sports :)

02/02/2009

You're having a laugh...

As promised (with no date given :) here are some of the funny/creative answers to last week's questions.

The Mystery Object of the Week (which actually was a meat tenderizer or Fleischmürbemachdingens)

According to The Muttis, it's an egg piercer for ostrich eggs, The A...lochs figured it had to be a musical instrument for getting women to hit the high notes (and that was before they heard the post-quiz karaoke), and Jetzt Ist Alles Besser would have used it to comb horse hair comb for a violin bow.

Being asked what nutcase David Blaine's first words were upon crawling out of his plexiglas case after hanging around above the Thames for 44 days, most teams went for something along the lines of "Finally a quiet piss..." while BAM were sure he asked "Did Newcastle win?" (self-styled magician he might be but clairvoyant he obviously ain't)... His (reportedly) first words were nicked off Michael Jackson "I love you all"....

A first, but definitely not last, was Connect Nine - here are the questions and answers in full (and connection/clues explained)

  1. This is the foor plan (1st floor) of which world famous building? A: The White House - Casa Blanca in Spanish
  2. Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet Jr. are the drivers for which Formula One team? A: Renault - Captain Louis Renault, chef de police of Casablanca)
  3. What was the name of the mascot of the 1984 Summer Olympics? A: Sam the Eagle - play it again, Sam.. even tho he never said that :)
  4. Which world famous song, initially called "Chant de guerre de l'armée du Rhin", was written by Claude Josephe Rouget de Lisle in 1792? A: La Marseillaise - sung by Victor Laszlo in response to "Die Wacht am Rhein"
  5. Which magician and endurance artist spent 44 days in a plexiglas case suspended over the Thames in 2003? A: David Blaine - Rick Blaine being Bogey's character's name
  6. Which Italian actress, filmmaker, author, and model was the face of cosmetics giant Lancôme from 1982 till 1996? A: Isabella Rossellini - daughter of Ingrid Berman
  7. In which country would you find Mt Jbel Toubkal, with 4,167m the highest peak of the Atlas mountain range? A: Morocco - Casablanca being the largest city
  8. Which Hungarian-Austrian-American actor, born Laszlo Löwenstein, played the main role in Fritz Lang's 1931 film "M"? A: Peter Lorre - petty thief Ugarte who nicked the letters of transit
  9. Which film studio produced the animated cartoon series Looney Toons (actually, you had to identify the musical theme)? A: Warner Bros. - studio which made/distributed Casablanca
The connection between all nine answers - obviously - was Casablanca. I do admit that it wasn't the easiest premiere for a new round, especially if you hadn't seen the movie (more than once)... Being Ana Malkovich were the only team to get the connection (even tho they only got 7 of the answers right).. so it was possible.

More fun & other answers & Manöverkritik later - gotta write no. 257. Watch this space for sneak & other previews.

27/01/2009

Quiky 272 & 273 - Doodle Round

As promised, and because I have nothing else to do :) - here are some your artistic achievements.
Quiky #272 - your mission was to draw: the logo of Amnesty International, the Toyota logo, the yoga pose known as "tree" and the 4th sheep the narrator drew for the little Prince. This would have been correct/satisfactory answers.

And this is how some of you saw it.

In Quiky #273 you were supposed to draw: the Cuban flag (incl. colours), the symbol once used by the artist now known as Prince, a heptagram, and the laundry symbol for "do not bleach". Which look more or less like this

..and that's what you came up with:

All in all not too shabby but there's room for improvement. Just not this week.

26/01/2009

Lost points & leftovers

Yep, I'm afraid last week's score sheet somehow got misplaced. No idea how that could happen. All I remember (because I have been reminded :) is that The Foam Gets Thicker got first place (newbies nicking the title, there's a challenge!!) and Pinkies & The Brain came second. In the (unlikely) event that the score sheet miraculously turns up I will post last week's table here. If you remember your place & points, let me know, I'll tell the world.
UPDATE: Pregnant Pree-Teens came a respectable third, shared with some team whose name eludes me.. and them.

As for all those who gave points for wrong drawings in the "doodle" round, fig. a) in the picture below shows a heptagon while fig. b) is the heptagram I asked for.

In order to avoid future confusion, I'll mark the sheets myself next time we doodle. Which won't be this week :)

There were a few funny answers in the picture round, especially for the Mystery Object of the Week (which was a deer call or Lockpfeife für Hirsche).

The Pregnant Preeteens reckoned it was a whip for self-flagellation (Peitsche zur Selbst-Kasteiung), while The Cannonballs would have used it to collect sperm from a bull (Bullen-Sperma-Sammlungs-Gerät). Hypo Real Estate figured it had to be a penis pump (don't give me ideas for the next MOotW :), Reimarus had blow jobs in mind and thought it was a bagpipe (Dudelsack) and the Feid Club went wild with an elephant tampon.

And while the score sheet went missing, the drawings from the doodle round are waiting to be scanned & posted. Any volunteers?

Last things last - open mike. A more than honourable mention goes to Dave from Caz & Dave who entertained us with the bestest Sinatra impression I've heard in a long time (BTW - if you're reading this Caroline, I'd still love the picture :).
Which brings us to annoying American gate-crashers. The rules for the little post-quiz singalong are quite simple.
It's not karaoke night - if you don't know the lyrics, invent new ones or don't sing. Or spend your Thursday night at the Irish Harp. I will not be ordered to "get on the damned internet and find the damned lyrics!"
Much fun as it can be (if you're drunk enough), the (sort of) singing thingie at the end is NOT part of the quiz but an added bonus (and even that's debatable) and totally depends on the good will of the person who has the microphone and the laptop. You asked politely, you might get to sing. You shout - you get FA.
If you can't live with that - leave (it).

09/01/2009

NYQ - rankings & riddles solved

For the Cannonballs - here's the story behind Ginger the Goldfish and how they could pretty exactly tell how many hours he was out in the cold... if you do believe the Daily Telegraph. But then, it was a BS question and we all need some "miracle" stories now and then.

Other questions, answers & pictures here over the weekend. Have a good one.

New Year's Quiky - come again?!

See - told you it'd work :)

Was actually a great night. Well-behaved quizzers, more or less answers to all questions (her full name was Sophia Petrillo) and new friends (or rivals, depending on which side of the fence you're on).
For the doubting Tommys (and just to prove my reasoning that the one on the right could only have been Sarko because old Phil would never wear high heels), here's the picture that shows the order of feet 2008, both home and away team.

The rest of the pictures, some of the questions (and answers) as well as points & stuff will be up here before the end of the week as we know it.

Next Quiky is a "regular" one, a few leftovers, the usual BS and maybe one of the new features. Schaun' mer mal..

Oh, and for les cordons bleus - here's the website of the annual world bollocks cooking championships.... Mahlzeit!
