Denk Mal! - zum Ersten

Houston, we have a Quiz-Off!!
Für alle die keine Mail bekommen haben - die Vorbereitungen laufen für das erste DenkMal! Quiz am Donnerstag den 26. Mai um 20.00 Uhr. Falls euch das nicht zu kurzfristig ist, nach der ganzen Verwirrung ;)
(Natürlich ist Himmelfahrt/Vatertag/Herrentag/usw. Quiz-frei... man kann auch trinken ohne das Gehirn zu strapazieren.)
Auch in der neuen Location gibt es Alkohol, Flying Nuts, Alkohol, alte Regeln, neue Fragen, PITCHER und Alkohol ;) und eventuell haben wir auch schon die Bildschirme für die Bilderrunde angeschlossen!!! Games Rounds werden auch wieder eingeführt ;)
Sagt mir der guten Ordnung halber nochmal wer sich am nächsten Donnerstag mit wie vielen Leuten einfindet, dann kann ich euch die schönsten Tische reservieren. Wer selbst anrufen will - Tel. 206 092 89.

(Wie) geht's weiter?

Nur noch mal zur Erinnerung - falls das Quiz eine (unmittelbare) Zukunft haben soll brauch ich bis Sonntag den 15. Mai Feedback mit wem wir in der neuen Location (Denk Mal Lounge - s. vorheriger Eintrag) donnerstags rechnen können (außert den Simpsons und Mütze :)... wir werden zwar sicherlich sehr schnell neue Teams dazu gewinnen aber es wäre nett mit einiegen 'alten' Gesichtern anzufangen.
Sagt mir also bis zum Wochenende 'Ja' oder 'Nein, auf keine Fall'... am besten per email.
Oder kommt am Sonnatg um 14.30 Uhr einfach zum SUPERFOOTBALLSUNDAY Newcastle-Chelsea Spiel vorbei. :) ;)

PS - bisher hab ich Rückmeldung von den Simpsons, Mütze und den Cannonballs (Frank - das mit dem Schal müssen wir verhandeln ;).. aber vielleicht könntest du deinen mitbringen, ich werd auch was schwarz-weißes aufhängen ;)

Wir werden also unter den 'Stammis' hier noch etwas Werbung machen und dann mit neuer Besetzung anfangen. GGf. erst am 2. Juni.. Mehr dazu hier in den nächsten Tagen.

Denk Mal! or New Beginnings?

for those of you whose mail addresses I don't have:
nachdem wir edm Kilkenny zu unrentabel geworden sind hätte ich da ein - zumindest erst mal Sommer- Quartier für uns, damit die Show weiter gehen kann.
Kleiner als KK, wohl nicht ausreichend für 50-60 Leute (aber wir könnten 2 in der Woche quizzen ;)
Erst mal kurz die Eckdaten, der Rest dann später next week hier (hab momentan alle Hände voll damit zu tun, kleinen faulen Sch...ülern kurz vor den Prüfungen noch was beizubringen ;)

Der Pub (Sportsbar/Lounge/Kneipe/Bar...) heißt Denk Mal (yep, 2 Worte - einen besseren Namen hätte ich für eine Pub Quiz location auch nicht gefunden ;)
Adresse ist Hannah-Ahrendt-Str. 1 in 10117 (Ecke Wilhelmstraße, Adlon, Britische Botschaft, Unter den Linden, Holocaust Memorial...)
200er Bus und U6 Mohrenstraße 1,5 Minuten zu Fuß... S-/U-Bahn Brandenburger Tor oder Potsdamer Platz ca. 5min.

Pros

• wir können den Donnerstag (evtl. sogar Freitag?) haben.. und sofort einziehen (ich kann erst nach den Prüfungen, d.h. 26. Mai wäre der erste potentielle Termin)
• es darf (muß aber nicht) drinnen geraucht werden (Air Condition bzw. im Sommer weit offene Tür :).. außerdem können WIR Raucher sicher ab und zu mal raus gehen ;)
• es gibt eine wunderschöne ruhige Terrasse, auf der die Beschallung auch funktioniert, d.h. im Sommer kann wahlweise draußen gespielt werden..
• Getränke-Preise sind zwar fast die selben wie im Kilkenny aber Stammgäste (und Quiz-Teams) kriegen Rabatt 
• (Quiz)Preise bleiben (Wodka, Getränke, Nuts & Shots)
• Inhaber und Personal sind alle super flink und freundlich und neuen Ideen gegenüber aufgeschlossen. Und wir können Werbung machen soviel wir wollen!!!
• Internationales Publikum (Botschaften, Adlon, Touri-Apartments nebenan) falls wir mal nicht voll werden ;)
• wir könnten wieder Spielerunden machen..
• Parkplätze sind - wenn auch nicht in unbegrenzter Menge - in der Straße vorhanden...

Kontra

• es gibt außer TK/Microwave-Pizza, HotDogs, Nüssen!!!, Chips o.ä. keine große Speisekarte 
• es gibt keine Pitcher - für z.B. die Simpsons :) - ließe sich aber sicher einrichten, aber der Service ist sehr gut, ihr sitzt nie auf dem Trockenen ;)
• vorerst würde es wieder Eintritt kosten (1€ pro Kopf - sicher zu verschmerzen).. 
• keine Großleinwand bzw Beamer mit Anschluß. ABER 2 von jeder Ecke einsehbare Fernseher (die hoffentlich problemlos auf externen Monitor erweitert werden können.. ansonsten Bilderrunde wieder auf Papier ;)

So, das erst mal in Kürze. Bevor ich mich in die Planung schmeiße und Technik austüftele, Werbung mache und Quiz schreibe, muß ich wissen wie viele Leute/Teams potentiell dabei wären. Vorerst habe ich keine Zeit andere Großraum-Locations zu suchen, und die Angebote die ich habe sind in Spandau oder Charlottenburg. Das wäre also zumindest für den Sommer erst mal ein sicheres Quartier, und mit der Zeit finden sich evtl. noch andere Lösungen.
Ausnahmsweise brauch ich von jedem Team eine Rückmeldung bis spätestens Sonntag den 15. damit ich weiß ob es sich lohnt und ob wir am 26. Mai das erste Denk Mal! Quiz ansetzen sollen. Fragt also bitte im Kreise mal rum, und gebt mir Bescheid.. per email oder hier als Kommentar.
...und falls es nichts wird habe ich zumindest meine neue Stammkneipe gefunden ;)

It's green, it's loud, it's fun.. and it's just once a year

St. Patrick's Day, that is. And thus we shall have the annual
St. Patrick's Day Special Edition
of New Quiky on Monday 14 March. And to stick with Irish stereotypes - we'll have 5 rounds about (and with) all things Ireland & Irish, alcohol, greewhiteandgold, Irish music, green vodka shots, a green hat, tacky Paddy's Day decoration, and TONS of fun (or craic, as Paddy would say). And the odd little gift or two.
Oh, and you have the chance to win a round of silly (or cool?) St. Patrick's Day Guinness hats (limited edition).
Of course you'd have to rechtzeitig reserve a table if you want the good seats.. or any seats at all.
No preview of rounds, themes, questions or any plans in general. Just turn up and be surprised.

Cottage Quiz

So we did it and went there. And did it. Well, I lasted exactly one round then I was slightly bored and decided to spend the rest of the night elsewhere. Not saying it's all that bad (the quiz, that is) but I had expected more after the hype.
No competition for the new and revamped one come August :)

Abort mission, abort mission

The best laid plans ... once again I won't be able to make it to the Happy Pigs. Stupid thing is that they always have their quiz on the last Friday of the month, a time that usually finds me pretty snowed under. June is no exception, tons of work that got shovelled onto my desk last minute, to be finished by Monday. And since I have no intention to work at the weekend - nightshift.

Seeing as I was the only one prepared to make the trek to the Pigs tonight anyway, no harm no foul. Maybe next month will be better. Or maybe we'll just do our own again.

Quiz Night out

After a few aborted attempts, I'm finally getting round to testing my knowledge (and other quizmasters' patience).
It's the last week of June and and the arena for this week's mental challenge is the "Happy Pigs Pub" in Ostkreuz (check this post for details).
From what I've heard it's rather packed on quiz night so reservations are recommended. If anyone feels like joining me on Friday 26 June at 9pm, I'd sure welcome the support (if not I'm absolutely capable of making a total tit out of myself, all on my own). Report will appear here (unlike the one about Murray's quiz).

Am Freitag den 26. Juni findet um 21.00 Uhr das monatliche Pub Quiz im "Happy Pigs Pub" statt und dieses Mal habe ich vor mein (Un-)Wissen und die Geduld des Haus-Quizmasters auf die Probe zu stellen. Falls sich irgendwer dazu gesellen möchte würde ich mich freuen, ich bin aber auch vollkommen bereit und in der Lage mich allein und ohne fremde Hilfe zum Löffel zu machen. Bericht erscheint dann hier next week :)

Dieses war der erste Streich

Almost 2 weeks after the final one, and reality has me back. Kicking and screaming, and wishing I wasn't but there's no way really to escape it.
So, after a week or so in McPom, enjoying quiescence that almost bordered boredom, I've begun the task of taking stock and making lists (and later, plans).

• Take time out to not do much, enjoy the Heimat, use the brain just enough to make it through the day and not get run over by one of the few cars that stink up my hometown? Reconnect with family and old friends to share memories, and laughs, and find out that, deep down, there's quite a bit of culchie left in me? Done.

(Since I still don't have a camera, I had to nick some of my da's pics)

• Return to the salt mines and resume where I had more or less dropped everything in my haste to get away? Inevitable. Done.
• Declutter laptop, external hard drive, and office computer? After 3 days to find out where to start, started. It's an ongoing process that will take a while... or find a premature end when I decide to just buy another hard drive.
• Go through roughly 250 bookmarks that lead to a) football/Newcastle-related websites, b) potential quiz questions, c) culinary blogs, d) BS sites that made me laugh and that I had intended to share here (I will, as soon as I find them), e) favourite TV shows I need to catch up on, or f) stuff I won't have the slightest clue as to why I wanted to keep it. Started, but that process is going to be even longer than the decluttering plan.
• Check out Berlin's other pub quizzes to observe and learn. And maybe win. Not necessarily though. Only got as far as 4 (Murray's, Celtic Cottage, Happy Pigs, Molly Malone's). Work in progress, dates tbc.
• Learn Spanish. Ay caramba! Can't even find my books, let alone Reyes to practise with. Plan postponed.
• Play boule. Or learn to play it properly. Or at least start watching the pros (ties in nicely with the plan to take up drawing/painting again). Have to find a place in Berlin where they congregate. Suggestions?
• Go bowling. It's been a while. Anyone interested leave a note.
• Develop my photoshop skills. Tons of tutorials that I've found on the 'net are waiting to be tried, and applied. Started, you'll see results here soon-ish. I hope.
• Read more. Write some. Cook more. Eat less. Exercise (almost certainly gonna be shelved). Find my inline skates. Use them. Explore Berlin (weather permitting). Find a buyer for NUFC. Play minigolf. Go to the cinema. Or museums. Or concerts... and that's not counting my jobs.

So many plans that a year wouldn't be enough, let alone a summer.
Achievements so far: not smoked in 9 days, not touched alcohol in 5. Not used favourite four-letter words in 2. The holiday state of "zen" persists. No bets on how long.

Frequently asked question: what's with the Quiky.. or other quizzes?.
When I look back I miss the Thursday night fun but more than that I'm enjoying my free time and the absence of obligations and self-imposed pressure . Old habits die hard tho. Every time I happen upon interesting/strange/funny facts on the 'net, in the papers or in daily life, I can't but think what a lovely quiz question it would make. I keep collecting stuff, just in case. The manager of the Irish Harp has been bugging me for 2 weeks now, chances are that we continue there, eventually. No plans in the near future tho.

And last but not least, an apology. I seem to have misplaced final countdown points (I vaguely remember Feid Club winning and Muttis coming 2nd). They're certainly somewhere, me being the world's biggest pack rat, I rarely throw away stuff. Until I find them, here's a wee puzzle to tide you over. I intent to post a new one (or old one) every day, genetix, macros, young ones, logos.... so that you can practise.

.. unfortunately has to cancel the quiz plans. I have a job that needs to get finished tonight and the hours are dwindling. Which should not keep you from putting your knowledge to the test. Go, win, and make me proud :))
Work also means that I won't have the time to put questions, points & links up here. Yet. I will. Eventually.
